Women’s Journey to Minsk & St. Petersburg | April 23-30
Deborah Jacobs | Emily Silberman | Linda Silberman
Travel to Minsk, Belarus and St. Petersburg, Russia with female philanthropists from around Atlanta. Explore Federation’s impact first hand in our sister city, Minsk and visit St. Petersburg, a major historical and cultural center with a Jewish resurgence.
Minsk is the capital city and a major industrial center of Belarus. Situated in what was once called the “Pale of Settlement”, Minsk was at one time Belarus’ largest Jewish community, with a rich and varied Jewish life, until the Nazis murdered 90% of the country’s Jews. Today, thanks to work by Federation, JDC, and JAFI, Minsk is once again home to what is by far Belarus’ largest Jewish population.
Jews in St. Petersburg, Russia are economically diverse, culturally sophisticated, and highly assimilated. Yet they also have a strong desire to reconnect with their Jewish heritage, not surprising for a city that spawned the Refusenik movement that helped bring down the Iron Curtain. With the help of Federation and JDC, tens of thousands are seeking to add Jewish expression to their commitment to St. Petersburg’s longstanding cultural, commercial, and intellectual preeminence.
