More Than Just a Free Trip to Israel The gift of a free trip to Israel from Birthright can be amazing, but many are unaware that there are extra benefits to Birthright Israel when you travel on an Atlanta Community Trip. Thanks to a generous grant from the Marcus Foundation, participants from the Atlanta Community Trip have access to a network of Atlanta-based Birthright alumni, a designated Federation professional to guide them through Jewish Atlanta, $250 in Passport Cash to use towards attending local Jewish programming, and the ability to apply for microgrants to pay for Jewish programs and events that they plan and execute.
Birthright alumni have used micro-grants and Passport Cash in lots of creative ways. Five years removed from Birthright Israel, David Silverman stays connected to his fellow participants by organizing a flag football team, through the MJCCA’s Young Adult Sports League. Six months out of the year, David’s team gathers for some friendly competition and a happy hour following their game.
Emily Levinson wanted to celebrate one of her favorite Jewish holidays with the new friends she made on the Atlanta Community Trip just a few months earlier. Emily transformed ElementATL, a BeltLine co-working space, into a festive Hanukkah party complete with tacky sweaters and catered dinner for 23 fellow trip participants.
Alumni have used their Passport Cash to attend some of these events: JCC Hanukkah with the Hawks | Havinagala | Chabad Intown’s White Party (Rosh Hashanah party) | Camp Fed | AJC Access Kickoff Event | ORT Summer Sips Event | Chabad Intown’s Drinks & Dreidels.
While Passport Cash is reserved for participants from the Atlanta Community Trip, the microgrant program is available to any Birthright alumni living in Atlanta, regardless of which Birthright trip they went on.
