Because of You: We are Standing With Israel’s Reservists’ Wives

Written by Tal Baum, Federation Lay Leader
I am a proud Israeli, a wife, a mother, and a member of this incredible Atlanta Jewish community. Since October 7, I’ve been deeply moved by the stories of the Forum for Reservists’ Wives—women in Israel who, overnight, became single parents while their husbands serve on the front lines. These women are raising children, running households, advancing their careers, and carrying the heavy burden of constant worry. And yet, they do so with strength, resilience, and love for Israel and the Jewish people.
Many of their husbands no longer have to serve—past the required age, they could be home. But as families, they’ve chosen sacrifice. The wives could have said, “Enough. Come home.” Instead, they stand together, willing to endure sleepless nights, fear, and endless responsibility—because they believe in the greater good of protecting Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.
As I listen to their stories, I cannot help but put myself in their shoes. I remember being just 16 when my then-boyfriend, now husband, was serving in the IDF. I would wait by the phone for his call, terrified when days went by without hearing from him. Now, as a wife and mother, I know how much heavier that burden would be if I had children to care for, a household to run, and a career to manage—all alone. That is the reality these women live every day.
This past September, through Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy, we welcomed members of the Forum for Reservists’ Wives to Atlanta. Together, as Lions of Judah and Pomegranates, we sat with them, heard their stories firsthand, and let them know they are not alone. Because of you—your generosity and belief in Federation—we can create this powerful connection, and support organizations like this through our allocations process and Israel & Jews Worldwide impact area. We show these women that thousands of miles away, there is a Jewish community that stands with them, embraces them, and honors their sacrifice.
Federation has given me the chance to be part of something larger than myself—to give back not only to Atlanta, but to Jews across the globe. Before I became involved, I didn’t realize just how far Federation’s impact reached. Now I know: your support touches Jewish lives in every corner of the world.
To our generous donors, I say thank you. Because of you, these women were welcomed with open arms in Atlanta. Because of you, their voices were heard, and their resilience honored. And because of you, I—and so many others—have the opportunity to live our Jewish values and stand together, as one people.
