The Advocacy Efforts of JAccess Atlanta

JAccess, a Federation initiative (formerly known as Jewish Abilities Atlanta), is dedicated to advocating for Jewish people with disabilities and ensuring that Jewish spaces are accessible to all. At its core, JAccess is a community of bright, talented individuals who advocate for themselves and their peers while working to build a more inclusive Jewish Atlanta.

One shining example of this advocacy is Susan Berch, who has worked at Jewish Family & Career Services for nearly three decades. While Susan is known for her dedication in her role, her passion for advocacy runs even deeper.

Susan’s Advocacy Through Supported Decision-Making

Susan is an active leader in Supported Decision-Making (SDM), a model that empowers people with disabilities to make their own choices with support, rather than having decisions made for them. SDM involves creating a clear plan that outlines who will provide support, how that support will work, and—most importantly—ensures that the individual maintains full autonomy over their own decisions.

For Susan, SDM has been a guiding framework in her life:

  • She used it when planning a memorable vacation to Hawaii with friends.
  • She relied on it when buying her condominium 20 years ago.
  • And she uses it every day when navigating the choices and opportunities that shape her life.

Why Choice and Control Matter

For most people, having control over day-to-day choices is fundamental. But for many people with disabilities, this right is often restricted. That’s why JAccess actively raises awareness of SDM as both a tool and a human right.

Recently, JAccess hosted an SDM webinar, where Susan and her colleagues presented on how SDM supports independence and dignity. The program highlighted how decision-making is not just about practical choices, but about empowerment, equality, and self-determination.

JAccess’ Mission

Through education, advocacy, and community programming, JAccess ensures that people with disabilities can live the lives they choose. By championing Supported Decision-Making and other inclusive practices, JAccess strengthens Jewish Atlanta as a place where everyone—like Susan—has the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and belong.

JAccess is proud to lead this work on behalf of Federation, making Jewish spaces inclusive and accessible for all.
