One Night, One Film, One Powerful Jewish Connection
May 1, 2026

In a nostalgic Atlanta theater, as the lights dimmed and the scent of masala-spiced popcorn filled the room, a group of young adults settled in, many not knowing they were about to discover a part of Jewish history they had never imagined.Â
Hosted by JGather Ambassador Rose Capin, the Shalom Bollywood screening transported attendees into the vibrant world of Indian Jewry, through the lens of film, music, and storytelling. On screen were the Jewish women who helped build Bollywood at a time when others could not. In the audience were people encountering, for the first time, the idea that Jewish life exists far beyond what theyâve always known.Â
For Rose, that moment of discovery was intentional.Â
After traveling to India through her work with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), she was struck by how little she knew. âI felt so ignorant not even knowing that there were Jews in India,â she shared. What she found instead was a community with thousands of years of history, and a story worth sharing.Â
âI wanted to bring that âaha momentâ to my community,â she said. Â
And she did.Â
Guests didnât just watch a film, they stepped into an experience. With a goodie bag of chai tea and traditional Indian sweets, the evening created space for curiosity, conversation, and connection. One attendee reflected, âI never would have seen that film without Rose organizing it⊠to learn about Jewish life in India through the lens of film/Bollywood was such a gift.âÂ
But perhaps the most powerful part of the night wasnât just what people learned, it was who showed up.Â
Many in the room had never attended a Federation event. Some were in interfaith relationships. Others were exploring what Judaism meant to them, if anything at all. âThis was the closest theyâve ever come to a Federation event,â Rose noted. Â
That is the power of JGather.Â
By trusting and investing in community members like Rose, Federation is able to reach people who arenât walking through institutional doors. âIt is accessing so many people who do Jewish in other ways, or donât really do Jewish,â Rose explained. Instead of asking people to come to Federation, JGather brings meaningful Jewish experiences into their neighborhoods, their friend groups, and their lives.Â
At the same time, the event brought Federationâs âIsrael and Jews Worldwideâ impact area to life in a deeply personal way. âSometimes we think⊠there is only Israel,â Rose said, âbut thereâs this huge diasporic global Jewish community.â That realization, shared collectively in a darkened theater, expanded what Jewish belonging could look like.Â
For donors, this is where impact becomes tangible.Â
With a relatively small grant, Federation helped unlock an experience that engaged new audiences, sparked curiosity about global Jewish life, and created authentic entry points into community. Itâs not just about funding an event, itâs about investing in people, ideas, and moments that ripple outward.Â
âJGather Grants are the heart of Federation to me right now,â Rose said. Â
Because sometimes, all it takes is one night, one story, and one unexpected connection to change how someone sees their place in the Jewish world.Â
And in an iconic Atlanta theater, thatâs exactly what happened.
