Struggle to Save Ethiopian Jews

The Jewish world thrilled to the news that 3,000 Ethiopian Jews are to be reunited with family members already in Israel. The first two airlifts at the end of May brought more than 200 Ethiopian olim home to make aliyah.

Federation board member Michael Kogon, who also serves as our Planning Community Impact Chair, has written movingly about his recent trip to Ethiopia to be with Ethiopian Jews awaiting the chance to make Aliyah and be reunited with family members in Israel. As Michael’s personal reflection documents, Ethiopian Jews are ready to come to Israel and desperate to escape war, famine, and poverty.

Michael also witnessed  the extreme lack of food experienced by these Ethiopian Jews waiting to make aliyah and saw firsthand the work of a small grassroots organization, the STRUGGLE TO SAVE ETHIOPIAN JEWRY (SSEJ) who are raising funds to provide food for those awaiting transport to Israel.
